The bi-annual Workshop series on Direct and Large EddySimulation (DLES) which started 1994 at the University of Surrey is concerned with modern techniques to simulate turbulent flows based on the partial or full resolution of the instantaneous turbulent flow structure. With the growing capacities of modern computer this approach has been gaining more and more interest over the years and will undoubtedly be further enhanced and applied. Recent techniques of hybrid modelling based on a combination of LES and RANS approaches also fall into this category and are covered as well.
The goal of the workshop is to establish a state-of-the-art of DNS, LES and related techniques for the computation and modelling of turbulent and transitional flows. A broad
range of topics will be addressed, such as aerodynamics, acoustics, combustion, multiphase flows, environmental, geophysical, MHD, and bio-medical applications, with an accent on the fundamentals of the respective modelling approaches.
Featured topics of the 9th edition of DLES in Dresden, 2013, will be atmospheric flows, tubulent MHD flows and LES Quality Assessment.
Keynote lectures will be given by:
Tim Colonius, Dan Henningson, Stefan Hickel, Jacques Magnaudet, Florian Menter, Heinz Pitsch, Annick Pouquet, Peter Sullivan, and Roel Verstappen.
This gathering of specialists in the field will be a unique opportunity for discussions about recent advances in the prediction, understanding and control of turbulent flows in academic and industrial situations.
