Description of activity
The First International School on HemoPhysics was organized in Montpellier, France, May 15-18, 2018. It was dedicated to Blood Microflows. Lectures have been given by highly renowned researchers of the field, with a target audience of PhD students, Researchers and Engineers. The addressed topics included microcirculation, red blood cell physics, blood rheology, physiopathological microflows, blood microfluidics, numerical simulations for blood flow, organ circulation, among others. In addition to the lectures, poster sessions have been organized so that the audience could discuss their research and benefit from the expertise of the lecturers. The social program included a visit of the Horiba Medical facilities and R&D center.
The school gathered 73 participants from 12 countries, 40% being students, either at the doctoral or Master level. Many reference experimental results regarding blood flows were obtained in the 70’s-80’s and most of them were presented by the authors themselves to illustrate all what is known as well as many of the questions yet no answered. A new generation of researchers is now revisiting this knowledge with the help of modern experimental and numerical methodologies, and many of them present as lecturer or
participant. The originality of HemPhys was thus to gather researchers from different generations and communities so that the knowledge about blood flows could be shared and future research topics discussed.
Thanks to this success, the team in charge of HemPhysics is now organizing the second edition in Montpellier October 5-8, 2021.
This edition will be dedicated to Blood and Networks and will gather an interdisciplinary board of lecturers, either physicists or physiologists.
The following lecturers have already confirmed their participation to HemPhys2:
The structure and objectives of the school will be essentially the same as for the first edition.
The venue will be the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (https://hemphys2.sciencesconf.org/) which is ideally located downtown Montpellier. All the breaks, lunches and poster sessions will be organized next to the amphitheater to ease informal discussions. We plan to host 80-90 participants.
