SPHERIC 2018

Galway, Ireland, 26-28 June 2018

The 13th SPHERIC International Workshop, 26-28 June 2018, will consist of a single track of keynote lectures, short research presentations, and panel discussion, with plenty of opportunities to meet and exchange ideas over three days. Presentations are accompanied by full-length papers in proceedings provided to attendees. The workshop will be of interest to all developers and users of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and related methods. Topics range from fundamental mathematics and numerics, to novel algorithms, implementation, and applications. Abstracts should be submitted by 23 February.

Before the main workshop, the optional training day on the 25th of June will provide an intensive theoretical and hands-on introduction to state-of-the-art SPH. This is ideal for students beginning their work in the field, but may also be of interest to seasoned researchers who want to explore a specific topic in depth or brush up on software skills.

TOPICS

The SPHERIC Workshop series is highly focused on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and related methods. SPH and other meshless particle approaches have unique strengths for modelling fluids and solids with dynamic free surfaces or interfaces.

The Workshop is open to all aspects of research and applications of SPH and related methods.

RESEARCH

Topics include development of numerical algorithms and analysis and evaluation of new or existing algorithms in SPH or related methods. High-performance computing, including GPUs, is also a major research theme. The community particularly welcomes work that addresses the SPHERIC Grand Challenges (GC). Research topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Convergence, consistency and stability (GC1)
  • Boundary conditions (GC2)
  • Adaptivity and variable resolution (GC3)
  • Coupling to other methods (GC4)
  • Free surfaces and moving boundaries
  • Solids and structures
  • Multiple continua and multi-phase flow
  • Viscosity and turbulence
  • Incompressible flow
  • Complex physics
  • High-performance computing
  • Hardware acceleration
  • Pre-processing and visualisation
  • Alternative and novel formulations (FVPM, MPS, RSPH…)

APPLICATION

Abstracts dealing with the application of SPH to challenging or new real-life problems are encouraged, and will be reviewed in a separate stream. SPHERIC Grand Challenge #5, Applicability to Industry, defines generic aspects of SPH which must be advanced to foster the method’s diffusion and adoption in industry. The following indicative list of application domains is by no means complete, and the Workshop would welcome presentations of the extension of SPH into new fields.

  • Applicability to industry (GC5)
  • Hydraulic applications
  • Maritime and naval architecture applications
  • Biomechanics and Medical Devices
  • Geotechnical applications
  • Microfluidics
  • Astrophysics
  • Solids and Fracture Mechanics
  • Disaster simulations

FORMAT

The three-day workshop consists of keynote lectures, research presentations, and moderated discussions. Presentations are based on peer-reviewed abstracts and accompanied by full-length papers. Edited proceedings are provided to all attendees, but authors retain copyright.

Before the workshop, on 25 June, there is a training day consisting of lectures and hands-on training with SPH software. On the same day, in parallel, there will be a collaborative session, convened by Prof. Daniel Duque of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, to edit the SPH Wikipedia page.

A preliminary outline of the programme is available to guide attendees in planning travel. However, please note the details are subject to change.
